A family vacation to Greece that trades the islands for the mainland north: twelve days from the city to the mountain of the gods and down to the beach. You start in Thessaloniki, with a guided walk past the White Tower, the Arch of Galerius and the Roman Agora, then a free day for Aristotelous Square and the Modiano Market. In Litochoro, at the foot of Mount Olympus, a mountain guide leads a sunset walk from Platamon Castle to the stone village of Paleos Panteleimonas. Next come the monasteries on the rocks of Meteora, and then four days in Halkidiki, with Aristotle’s birthplace at Stageira, the Petralona Cave and ice cream by the sea.
Two of the guided days on this trip are private. In Thessaloniki a state-licensed guide spends four hours walking you through the city’s Roman and Byzantine past, from the White Tower at the port to the palace of Galerius and the World Heritage-listed churches. In Meteora a local tour leader drives you to up to three monasteries, with a guided visit inside one of them, and tells the story of the hermits who first climbed these rocks. The Olympus evening is a small group walk with a professional mountain guide, ending as the sun goes down over Paleos Panteleimonas. In Halkidiki the days are yours: the ruins of Olynthos, the stalactites of Petralona Cave, the seafront at Nikiti and the old stone lanes of Afitos.

Other interesting places to visit in the city center of Thessaloniki are the Roman Agora, beautifully preserved ancient theater, the palace of Galerius, a vestige of the Roman era, as well as the World Heritage-listed Byzantine churches.
