Crete Itinerary in 10 Days: Heraklion, Rethymno, Chania & Raki

This 10-day Crete itinerary crosses the island from Heraklion to Rethymno and Chania, and it eats well the whole way. It opens at the Palace of Knossos with an expert guide, followed by a Heraklion food tour of Cretan herbal tea, thyme honey and local wine. A day in the inland villages and on the windmill plain of the Lasithi Plateau ends with lunch at a rustic taverna, and a private flight over the coast may even put you at the controls for a moment. Around Rethymno you taste olive oil, wine and raki where they are made, then head into three sacred caves, the last of them linked to Zeus. In Chania, a village host everyone calls “Uncle” teaches you his gemista, and a dance instructor in Alikianos walks you through at least three traditional Cretan dances.

Highlights

Knossos comes first, with a guide who brings the Minoans and the legend of the Minotaur to life, then a Heraklion food tour with tastings that can replace lunch. The next day you wander small villages over a local coffee, take in the Lasithi Plateau and sit down to a homemade style meal at a rustic taverna. A private plane trip with a trainer pilot lets you choose between the west coast, the east coast or a flight over the Santorini caldera. From Rethymno you visit an olive mill, a winery and a raki distillery before a traditional Cretan lunch, and spend a full day with a licensed guide in the caves of Melidoni, Zoniana and Ideon Andron. Chania ends the trip with a cooking lesson in a mountain village, a dip in the pool while lunch bakes in the wood-fired oven, and a day of Cretan dance in Alikianos, traditional outfit and photos included.
