Cyclades Island Hopping in 12 Days: Tinos, Syros, Naxos & Amorgos

This 12-day Cyclades island hopping trip goes to four islands where village life, crafts and food still set the pace. On Tinos you drive through the inland villages to Volax, where residents still weave baskets among giant granite boulders, then ride a 4×4 past the green marble quarry to Pyrgos, the island’s artistic hub. Syros brings loukoumi, a local resident’s family recipes in Episkopio and a winery tasting, plus a day from the old Tarsanas shipyard up to Venetian Ano Syros. On Naxos you taste wine and cheese in an 800-year-old Venetian cellar before sunset at the Portara, then meet a potter at the wheel, taste Kitron where it is distilled and find the Kouros of Flerio lying among the trees. Amorgos closes the trip with a private Greek dance class.

Highlights

Tinos opens with a private drive through Triantaros, Dyo Choria and Arnados to Falatados, known for its raki and old treadle looms, up Exomvourgo for the views and on to Volax. A second day by 4×4 jeep crosses Kardiani and Isternia to the bay of Vathy for a swim and ends in Pyrgos. On Syros you sample Cycladic specialties and loukoumi, are welcomed into a local home in Episkopio and taste wines with local bites, then see the Enfield 8000 electric car at Tarsanas, the alleys of Ano Syros and a traditional country house in Poseidonia. Naxos gives you a wine and mythology walk to the castle and the Portara at sunset, and a day through Damalas, Halki, Panagia Drosiani, Apiranthos and Flerio. On Amorgos a dance teacher shapes a private lesson around what you already know and what you want to learn.

At the entrance of the port is the islet of Palatia where there’s an impressive marble gate, Apollo temple, dating back to the 6th century BC. According to legend, in this place known as “Portara” the god Dionysius found Ariadni there, after being abandoned by Theseus.

Welcome to Amorgos

The steep island of the Big Blue, Amorgos combines epic views of the Aegean with the best features of the Cyclades… great beaches, local traditions and laid-back villages.

Many have dropped by Amorgos: pirates, 19th-century travellers, 70s hippies and locals from other Cyclades islands who sought oracles from the “chattering waters” of Ai Giorgis Varsamitis. But now it’s your time to discover an island whose venerable traditions, old paths and remote villages will make you forget the 20th century, never mind the 21st.

Making a pilgrimage to Agia Anna beach, where Luc Besson shot The Big Blue, is a must. As is lighting a candle in the awe-inspiring Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa and walking up to the castle-topped main town, with its cobblestone Cycladic streets.

Other highlights on Amorgos include taking a boat ride from Katapola or Aigiali, the island’s two ports, and sipping nightcaps of rakomelo, the homemade honeyed firewater.
