Platis Gialos Beach at a Glance

Platis Gialos beach is located in the southern part of Mykonos, only 5km from Mykonos Town, and is a fully organized beach with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as restaurants and hotels. It faces the south; thus, it is sheltered from the strong Meltemi winds that are usually blowing on the northern coast of Mykonos.

Shallow waters make Platis Gialos a great beach for Greece family vacations. But it is also a perfect location for couples & groups of friends who want to enjoy beach clubs and water sports. Plenty of transport to and from the beach.

The bay is protected from the Meltemi by facing in a southern direction. Thus, although it can be very windy, the sea is generally calm, and there is little air movement to disperse the heat of the day. It can be very hot and airless on the beach in the afternoon on some summer days.

How to Get to Platis Gialos Beach

To get to Platis Gialos from Mykonos Town, take the bus from Fabrika Square (every 30 minutes, 10-15 minutes, €1.80 each way). Traveling by taxi is also an option and will take about 10 minutes to reach the beach, a comfortable, low-effort choice for Greece vacations for seniors. For short trips or for groups of people, it is also the most convenient way to travel.

The southern part of Mykonos is also served from a concrete jetty at Platis Gialos Beach. Water taxis run to Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia beaches from there. In July and August, parking near the beach is strictly limited and fills up fast, so if you take a car, make sure to arrive early.

Sunbeds, Umbrellas & Beach Access

Platis Gialos is a free beach. You can bring your own towel and lie on the sand without paying an entrance fee. The free section is limited, though, and fills up early in the peak season. Most people rent sunbeds. The prices for sunbeds vary a lot, depending on the section. For example, a budget row of sunbeds costs about €40, a mid-range pair costs €60-80, and a premium section of sunbeds costs up to €150.

It is easy to walk along the beach to compare all the operators on offer. Prices for sunloungers generally decrease the further you are from the town center.

Best Beach Clubs at Platis Gialos

Platis Gialos has a few good-quality beach clubs to choose from, as well as plenty of simple sunbeds for a relaxing beach day or longer stay. Some are part of a hotel, and others are made for long days at the beach where customers can enjoy lunch and music.

Some beach clubs enforce a minimum spend per sunbed. It is best to ask about the minimum spend before you sit down to ensure you are getting the best value for your money. Compare the minimum spend per sunbed at each of the beach clubs.

  • Branco Mykonos: A beach club with a barefoot-luxury touch. The club is playing music from noon till late. Here, a relaxed but very stylish crowd is having a great time in this laid-back but polished setting. A great day of relaxation is guaranteed while having food and drinks served to you.
  • Nammos: This club is based on the neighboring Psarou Beach, one of Mykonos’s most fashionable stretches of coast, and it is about a 20-minute walk from Platis Gialos Beach. It is one of the island’s most famous clubs, and as such it has a high price tag to match.
  • Hotel-affiliated beach fronts (Petasos Hotel, Petinos Hotel, etc): They usually offer sunbeds to non-guests and are generally quieter and more reliable about pricing.

Best Restaurants at Platis Gialos Beach

Restaurants and tavernas line the beach, and most have tables and chairs on the sand. There are enough restaurants serving classic Greek dishes as well as more modern Mediterranean food to ensure that you can eat well for several days without returning to the same one.

  • Mini-markets on the beach sell water, snacks, and some basic articles for shopping on the go. It is better to buy such items in a mini-market rather than overpay in restaurants.
  • Avli Tou Thodori. A restaurant located in the western part of the beach, serving high-quality Greek and Mediterranean dishes.
  • Yialo-Yialo: It is one of the oldest restaurants on the beach, in the center of it, serving traditional Greek dishes, as well as fresh seafood, of high standards. Very reliable.
  • Blue Myth: Known for its Greek Nights, it is located in the Petinos Hotel, with live music and dancing, for dinner with atmosphere. If beach days like this sound like your kind of trip, explore our Greece vacation packages or request one built around Mykonos and beyond.

Beach Hopping from Platis Gialos

Platis Gialos is a great starting point to explore the rest of the south coast of Mykonos. Whether by foot or taxi, it all comes down to your time and energy.

The water taxi from Platis Gialos is a great way to start your tour, and a solid option for groups of friends travelling in Greece who want to cover several beaches in one day. A day pass ticket costs around €20. With that, you can get on and off as many times as you like during the day. These are the beaches you can visit with the water taxi: Paraga, Paradise, Super Paradise, Agrari and Elia. Water taxis operate from mid-May till end of October.

Meg. S and her friends confirm our views. She loved her trip to Mykonos, as you can see in her review she left for Greece Insiders:

“Trip of a lifetime!
…an amazing trip for 8 friends starting in Athens then onto Mykonos…unforgettable memories thanks to her and her team of knowledgeable, fun guides. We would not hesitate to recommend Greece Insiders…”

Walking from Platis Gialos to Paradise Beach is a great way to admire the scenic views. This route takes 30 minutes to 45 minutes to complete. On the way, you will also visit Paraga Beach, a quiet and peaceful location. This part of the route runs close to the coastline and is made of rock; therefore, it is not suitable for flip-flops or strollers. Wear proper shoes, carry plenty of water with you, and be prepared to do some scrambling up and down rocks in a few places. An early morning start is better, as it is cooler and easier.

Best Time to Visit Platis Gialos Beach

Mornings between 9 AM and 11 PM are the quietest. It’s easier to find sunbeds, and the light is softer, perfect for photos. The best time of year to visit is May, June, and September. The warm water, the thin crowds, and the space and availability of sunbeds can all make for an idyllic day.

In the peak season months of July and August, by mid-morning the beach is crowded. The best sunbeds are usually taken early in the day. Expect a long queue for the water taxi. It is better to come early in the day to avoid the chaos.

Who Platis Gialos Beach Is Best For

Families will have an easy time at this beach. The water is shallow and clean, and there are lots of facilities nearby. Couples on their honeymoon in Greece will have a good mix of lazy days on the beach and smart beach clubs to choose from, all within a short walk of good restaurants for evening meals.

The main feature of this beach is the water taxi that goes to and from other beaches on the island. This makes Platis Gialos a good base for both families and groups of friends who like beach-hopping. It is not a good choice for people who are looking for a quiet, isolated beach, as it is the busiest on Mykonos.
