White Beach Santorini: Complete Guide

White Beach is a hidden gem in Santorini. It is tucked in a small cove and surrounded by pale volcanic cliffs on the southern coast. Still, you need to take into account the difficulty in accessing it and the lack of amenities and shade. These are also the reasons why it doesn’t attract a crowd though.

What Is White Beach?

Located along Santorini’s southwestern coast and hidden in a small cove, White Beach is close to the village of Akrotiri and just a few hundred meters away from the popular Red Beach. Still, contrary to the name, this beach doesn’t have white sand. It takes its name from the surroundings.

Vast white-colored pumice cliffs stand on both sides, rising to 20 – 25m. These were formed by an older volcanic eruption cycle, which predates the one that created Santorini’s famous caldera around 1600 BC. That’s why the rock here looks so different from the red, iron-rich cliffs at the neighboring beach.

The White Beach bay is small and has a shoreline length of about 100 to 200m. It forms a sheltered crescent. That means it stays tranquil even if there is a strong wind on other areas of the island. This particular blend of being small, enclosed, and surrounded by cliffs is why White Beach seems unique.

Is White Beach Worth Visiting?

White Beach is worth visiting if you value dramatic scenery and peace over comfort and convenience. This small bay is accessible only by boat. It is surrounded by volcanic rock cliffs of a very light shade, and you can swim and go snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters. Yet, after midday, there are no shade spots, no amenities, and the seabed is rocky. In most cases, people visit White Beach together with Red Beach as part of a half-day tour.

This is definitely a great option for those who have had enough of the organized beach parties on Santorini and want something more natural. Scuba divers and snorkelers, for example, who are very particular about rocky underwater structures. Or photographers who are always chasing a new scenery. And of course, anyone already planning to visit Red Beach or the nearby Akrotiri archaeological site.

It is a less favorable option for families with young kids. There’s almost no shade, and getting into the water can be a challenge. Also, if you prefer to spend your day on a beach with sunbeds and restaurants nearby, then White Beach won’t be for you. Kamari and Perissa or other Santorini beaches would suit that kind of day much better.

How to Get to White Beach

White Beach lacks direct road access. This is the biggest reason the beach hasn’t become overcrowded. There are other options to reach the beach. Most involve the water. The only exception is a walking path whose condition is really ambiguous right now.

By Boat Taxi from Red Beach

The easiest and most often used is the boat taxi service that operates between Red, White and Black Beaches. Taxi boats run approximately from May – October. For unlimited boat rides among these beaches, a day ticket generally costs €15 per person. During the high season, there will be a boat about every 30 minutes. Fewer in shoulder season. Double-check the last return time when you arrive, because schedules can change quite a bit with the weather. This low-effort option also makes it one of the more workable routes for senior travel in Greece, since it skips the hiking and kayaking alternatives entirely.

Other boat tours combine visiting White Beach with the Red Beach and the caldera. The duration of these tours is 3 – 5 hours and the price per person is between €30 – 60. Yet these trips only allow about 20 – 30 minutes at White Beach. So, if the idea is to avoid planning transport, this could work well for you. But, if you do plan to spend a whole day relaxing on the beach, this might be less attractive. 

By Kayak or Private Boat

If you prefer a flexible arrangement, there are opportunities to rent kayaks at Akrotiri or Red Beach for half a day, priced around €20 – 40. Renting a small motorboat (no license required in Greece for power engines up to 30HP) generally costs you between €80 – 120 per day. These two are the least constrained ways to get around. On Foot, Conflicting Reports

This is the very point where guides disagree. Some describe an unmarked trail from the Akrotiri archaeological site, which would take you about 20 – 25 minutes uphill and over rough terrain. Others claim that due to a danger of falling rocks, paths are considered too unsafe and have been shut permanently.

What to Expect Once You’re There

The boat drops you near the cove, and the first thing most people will see is the seabed: volcanic pebbles rather than sand, which makes bare feet uncomfortable very fast. Water shoes are essential.

There is a natural rock formation on one side of the cove, forming a tiny swimming passage, one of White Beach’s most unforgettable features, and a quietly memorable stop for honeymoons in Greece. You can snorkel there, as visibility remains quite clear even next to the cliff base. Still, be careful and don’t go too close to the rock face. There are occasional small rockfalls.

The only time shade is available is very early in the day when the towering cliffs still manage to offer some protection. The afternoon will be too harsh. Plan your arrival time, and pack a good supply of sunscreen.

Best Time to Visit

May and June offer the best combination. They are warm enough to swim, boat taxis are running reliably, and crowds are not very thick yet. July through August, boat services are the most consistent, but visitors increase. Still, even in peak season, White Beach has fewer crowds. It is a small cove, though, and it can fill fast. September is a very good option as the sea is warm, and the crowds are slowly disappearing. In October, boat taxis may not run daily, and the weather is not as reliable.

Time of day matters as much as time of year. Come in before 11:00, and you can enjoy the views as the cliffs’ lighting is at its peak. It is also the quietest version of the cove before day-trip boats start arriving in numbers.

Safety Notes

The same cliffs that make White Beach a nice place to visit are also the reason to stay alert. Their composition of pumice and volcanic ash is soft, and occasionally tiny rockslides occur. Do not sit near the bases of the cliffs. Most of all, prevent children from getting near there.

There’s no lifeguard, so swim within your capabilities. Another thing to bear in mind is sun exposure. With little shade, heat builds up quickly. Bring plenty of water.

The access to the beach is rocky and pebbly, so you’ll need to plan ahead. Use water shoes to avoid the discomfort of walking on stones. And because boat timing is the only way in or out, it’s worth confirming the last return departure as soon as you arrive. Phone signal is not guaranteed.

Pairing It With the Rest of the South Coast

White Beach works best as part of a half-day trip. A simple plan: start your day at Red Beach in the morning hours. Then take a boat taxi to White Beach for a few hours. From there, return to Akrotiri for dinner and to explore the nearby Akrotiri archaeological site. Travelers with a car can extend this loop to Vlychada Beach, which offers equally dramatic views of the cliffs without needing a boat.
