Corfu: the Grand Lady of the Ionian

The fact that Corfu’s trademark is actually another island – named Pontikonisi (Mouse Island or the Isle of Mice), just big enough to hold the Pantokrator monastery – is highly indicative of the island’s outward-looking spirit.

The route up the mountain can be challenging but the view you’ll get is truly worth trying. The church closes before sunset so if you want to see the interior you should get there well before.

Also, how about immersing yourselves in a bygone Corfu experience? Visit a 19th century noble’s mansion with a unique architecture. Through automated figures and even robotic technology, Casa Parlante in Corfu town promises to give life to history.

Well, history is heavily involved in the equation, inescapably! According to the legend, if you swims in the Canal D’ Amour – a natural tunnel-like passage –  you are going to find your soul-mate. While in Sidari, two of the most breathtaking sandy beaches in Greece wait for you to sunbathe and unwind.

Another great idea is a short visit to Kassiopi, a tiny, peaceful village with lovely taverns and a clear turquoise sea to swim and snorkel. The setting is so ideal that it makes the difficulty of getting in and out of the rocky cove a mere triviality.

Outside the hustle and bustle of the main town of Corfu lies your ideal nightlife spot: the Vine bar. The owner makes excellent cocktails while the decoration is simply fabulous. A stunning beer garden at the back of the bar, with views of the sea, provides a perfect place to relax. But, if you’re looking for a gorgeous place to have a cocktail and watch the sun go down look no further that the Boathouse in Roda. The music plays at a level that is noticeable but which easily allows casual conversation.

It may sound bizarre but, for a better, more relaxed version of a Corfu getaway, complete with prime beach weather and hardly any crowds, you should plan a trip for early fall.

Average highs in September rest in the low 20s, perfect for a swim in the Mediterranean. The weather is also ideal for hiking and sight-seeing.

If you happen to visit Corfu at the end of September there’s a chance not to be missed: the island’s Beer Festival! In its fifth straight year of existence, it offers visitors tastes of local cuisine, as well as a great variety of different beer styles. It runs from the 26th until the 30th and admission is free.

However, another great period to possibly visit is during the Easter celebration. On Holy Saturday clay jars are thrown into the streets from the balconies, as part of tradition and for that reason you are advised to stay in a safe distance!
