How to Get to Red Beach Santorini

By car or ATV: The beach is about 12km south of Fira and it will take about 20 minutes by car. You follow the signs towards the Akrotiri village and the archaeological site. You can park in the parking lot next to the site’s entrance. The parking spaces cost about €6 – 7 per day. Please note that the parking lot fills up before 10 AM in the peak summer months, so it’s better to be early on the road.

By bus: From Fira you can take a KTEL bus to Akrotiri for approximately €2 each way. They run every hour or so, or 30 minutes in summer. From the bus stop it is a 10 minute walk up to the top of the path that descends down to the beach.

By boat: During the summer months you can also arrive by boat. From the harbor of Akrotiri, Kamari and Perissa boats leave regularly for Red Beach and White Beach. Prices are between €5 – 15, depending on the route and the stops on the way.

Getting to the sandy beach from the top takes around 5 – 10 minutes walking down a very steep and rugged footpath. Comfortable footwear is essential here as the path is made of rough volcanic gravel. Flip-flops are unlikely to survive the descent. Access to the beach itself is free of charge and you only pay for parking, your means of transport, or renting a sunbed and umbrella on the beach. Red Beach vs. White Beach

White Beach is around the headland from Red Beach. There are no paths between the two coves, and the loose rock and unstable cliff crossing the land between them is highly not recommended by local guides. However, a long but relatively easy path to Kambia Beach does exist. On a calm day, hikers can make their way to the White Beach. However, for most visitors the easiest way to see both coves would be to take a short boat trip and visit them as part of a circuit, a fun half-day option for group travel with friends who want two very different beaches in one outing.

If you only have time to visit one of the beaches then better go for Red Beach. However, visiting both beaches on a boat trip is a great way to pair the two contrasting beaches.

Best Time to Visit Red Beach Santorini

Red Beach is even more stunning in the late afternoon hours. Tips for Visiting Reb Beach Santorini

Wear proper shoes, not flip-flops. The path down consists of loose stones and rocks that can be quite uneven. The beach is covered with small pebbles rather than sand, so it is not very suitable for flip-flops. If you plan to go for a swim, bring some water shoes with you. The seabed near the edge is rocky as well.

Don’t forget to bring water and snacks with you. There is a small canteen at the start of the path but no more after that. There is no shade on the beach so don’t forget your sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.

Stick to the marked areas as the cliffs face rockfalls sometimes. Better to stick to barricaded or signed parts.
