Skala is a lovely spot for beach lovers, first time visitors, and nightlife seekers. It is located in the south-eastern part of Kefalonia and going there by taxi from the airport will take about 40 minutes. This is the main town by the sea on the island and if it happens to be your first trip here, and you don’t have a car, this is the best location to stay. Most of the tour operators on the island run from Skala, making it easy to request a tailor-made trip to Kefalonia that includes beaches, boat tours, and sightseeing around the island.
The town wraps around a sandy beach almost 3km long, the longest beach in Kefalonia. There are sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, a lot of open spaces to simply put your towel on, beach bars, watersports and a beach scene that is relaxed but lively with seafront restaurants and cocktail bars. July and August is peak season, and the northern sights are more than 1.5 hours away by car.
Best for: first-time visitors, families, beach lovers, nightlife seekers, travellers without a car.
Recommended hotels in Skala:
- Luxury: Apostolata Island Resort & Spa
- Mid-range: Tesoro Blu (adults-only)
- Family-friendly: Hotel San Giorgio
- Budget: Makis Hotel
Lassi: Best for Beaches Near the Airport

Platis Gialos beach at Argostoli of Kefalonia island in Greece. Spectacular view over beach of Platis Gialos near Lassi, Argostoli. Platis Gialos beach with soft sand and turquoise water in Lassi.
Lassi is the resort area nearest to Kefalonia Airport, only a 10-minute drive from it. Also, it is only 5 minutes from Argostoli, the capital. This mixture of beach availability and convenience makes it one of the easiest bases on the island, especially if you are short on time or with small children.
Being the oldest resort area in Kefalonia, it boasts two Blue Flag beaches, Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos. Both have golden sand and calm shallow waters. Also, pine trees surrounding the area provide shade. Great places to eat line the main road, as do mini-markets, car rentals and beach bars with a relaxed atmosphere. During peak season Lassi can feel a bit crowded and, unlike Assos or Agia Efimia, it does not have that authentic traditional Greek village feel.
Best for: families, couples wanting beach plus convenience, first-time visitors.
Recommended hotels in Lassi:
- Luxury: F Zeen Kefalonia (adults-only, wellness-focused), White Rocks Hotel
- Mid-range: Thalassa Boutique Hotel, Princess Hotel
- Budget: Lorenzo House Apartments
Argostoli: Best for Nightlife, Culture & Travellers Without a Car

Aerial drone view of Argostoli (Argostolion), famous city and capital of Cefalonia (Kefalonia) island, Ionian islands, Greece. Argostoli town, former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Greece.
Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, is located on the southwest coast, just 15 minutes from the airport by car. It is the main transport hub on the island featuring a central bus station, the ferry to Lixouri as well as connections to most major towns. This makes it the most convenient place for travellers without a car to stay and also the only part of the island that has life outside the summer season too.
Set around Vallianou Square and the pedestrianised Lithostroto, which is full of cafes, restaurants and shops, the town centre is very walkable. You can see the lagoon from the De Bosset stone bridge, there are inspiring views up at the Saint Theodore Lighthouse, and the Archaeological Museum and the Korgialenio Historic and Folklore Museum are all worth a visit. It is quite common for sea turtles to show up at the harbour in the early morning as the fishermen come back with their catch. Nightlife here revolves around bars with occasional live music rather than clubs.
Best for: travellers without a car, culture lovers, first-time visitors who want a city base, nightlife in moderation.
Recommended hotels in Argostoli:
- Luxury: Canale Hotel & Suites
- Boutique: Kefalonia Grand, Tourist Boutique Hotel
- Mid-range: Aenos Hotel
- Budget: Argostoli Bay View
Fiskardo: Best for Couples, Luxury & Fine Dining

Fiskardo is located on the northernmost tip of Kefalonia, 1 hour and 15 minutes by car from the airport. It is the only village in the island that survived the devastating 1953 earthquake and because of this, its colorful Venetian buildings, pastel mansions and cobbled lanes are still preserved. The naturally horseshoe-shaped harbor is lined with luxury yachts during summer while small ferries connecting Fiskardo with Ithaca and Lefkada dock alongside them.
This is the most luxurious place to stay on the island. The waterfront area is teeming with boutique shops and some of the best seafood restaurants in Kefalonia, while the bay is sprinkled with high-end villas and small hotels. The closest beaches are Foki in the south and Emplisi in the north, both of which are about 5 minutes by car.
Best for: couples, honeymooners, luxury travellers, foodies, island-hoppers.
Recommended hotels in Fiskardo:
- Luxury: Emelisse Nature Resort
- Boutique: Fiscardo Bay Hotel
- Apartments: Stella Apartments, Nicolas Rooms
Assos: Best for Romance & Quiet Scenery
Assos is located on the northwestern coast of Kefalonia, at about the midpoint between Argostoli and Fiskardo and is accessible via a winding mountain road leading down to the sea. This village is probably the most photographed in Greece, a tiny settlement of around 100 people, perched on a narrow isthmus, with Venetian-style pastel houses lining the tranquil pebble bay. A Venetian castle from the 15th century tops the headland behind the village and can be walked to from the harbour.
What attracts visitors here is the size and character of the place rather than the facilities. There is only a small number of tavernas, a couple of small shops, and very few lodgings, precisely the reasons why it is the choice of couples and quiet holiday-makers. Myrtos Beach is a 20-minute drive to the south, so Assos is a good lodging place for one of the best-known beaches in Greece.
Best for: couples, quiet getaways, travellers using the village as a Myrtos Beach base.
Recommended hotels in Assos:
- Luxury: Linardos Apartments, Kanakis Apartments
- Budget: Pension Gerania, Romanza Studios
Agia Efimia & Sami: Best Central Base for Exploring
Agia Efimia and Sami are located on the east coast of the island, making them a great base for exploring Kefalonia travel highlights, about 40 minutes from the airport. Being in the middle of the island, this is one of the best areas for travelers planning a trip to Greece focused on island exploration and sightseeing. You can get to Myrtos Beach, Melissani Cave, Antisamos Beach, and take the ferry to Ithaca quite easily from here. Also, the island’s two main roads (north toward Fiskardo and south toward Argostoli) start from here.
Sami is the bigger one of the two, a working port town that was used for filming Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Though, its architecture is mostly post-1953 rebuilding and ferries can make it noisier. Agia Efimia, just 10 minutes north, is a nicer fishing village with a curved harbour, quiet tavernas and a more genuine atmosphere. Both are good choices for families going on long trips and for group travel with friends in Greece, especially for travelers renting villas.
Best for: first-time visitors wanting to maximise sightseeing, families on longer trips, groups renting villas.
Recommended hotels:
- Luxury: Ionian Emerald Resort
- Mid-range: Sami Beach Hotel
- Budget: Mary’s Studios & Apartment, Muses Studios
Quieter Alternatives: Lourdas, Katelios, Svoronata & Lixouri
Those who think the primary resort towns to be too crowded will find several smaller bases in Kefalonia that are ideal for senior travel in Greece, thanks to their slower pace of life and local atmosphere. These smaller destination areas are going to be most suitable for travelers able to rent a car, since amenities and transport links are more limited than in Skala or Lassi.
Lourdas (Lourdata)
Located on the southern shore, Lourdas is a lovely beach resort 30 minutes’ drive from the airport, situated at the foot of the Mount Ainos range. As one of the longest beaches in the island, its main feature is a 1.5km flat sandy stretch with calm water, that is perfect for families with young children. Two parts of the village are carved out, one above the sea towards the mountain and one below by the beach. You can find traditional taverns in both parts.
Hotel picks: Lara Hotel and F Zeen Kefalonia.
Katelios
Katelios is a tiny fishing village with a laid-back atmosphere located on the south coast, about 15 minutes’ drive from Skala. Its major attractions comprise a tranquil sandy beach, family-run tavernas and being one of the best places on the island to see the loggerhead sea turtles when they are nesting. Time here goes by very slowly as the lifestyle is relaxed on purpose, so it’s an excellent option for families with children who are ready to experience a different kind of holiday.
Hotel picks: Odyssey Hotel and Albouro Apartments.
Svoronata
Svoronata is a charming village located just south of the airport, encompassed by olive groves, vineyards, and a few wineries that people can visit. Since it is only a 5 to 10-minute drive away from the airport, it is the most convenient place for early departures. At the same time, it is not far from beautiful sandy beaches like Ammes, Avithos, and Ai-Helis. There’s not much to do in the village itself, which is exactly the point for travellers who want peace and countryside.
Hotel picks: Leivatho Hotel and Olive Grove Resort.
Lixouri & the Paliki Peninsula
Lixouri, the second-largest town of Kefalonia, is located on the Paliki Peninsula, just across the bay from Argostoli. The small car ferry from Argostoli, running every 30 minutes in summer, is the simplest means to get there. This part of the island has a more traditional Greek atmosphere with fewer tourists, the local tavernas around Plateia Petritsi, and the chance to discover some of the most beautiful and unique beaches of the island. These include the crimson-colored Xi Beach surrounded by white cliffs made of clay and Petani.
Hotel picks: Aura Hotel (in Lixouri town) and Cephalonia Palace (near Xi Beach).

Where to Stay in Kefalonia for Nightlife
Argostoli and Skala are the areas to consider if you are looking for nightlife in Kefalonia. While Argostoli’s Vallianou Square has lively bars and restaurants all year round, Skala is full of beach bars that come alive in the summer. Though, keep in mind that Kefalonia is not a clubbing destination. You will find bars, live music and beach parties rather than nightclubs.
Where to Stay in Kefalonia Without a Car
Argostoli, Lassi and Skala are the top picks if you are thinking of staying in Kefalonia without a car. If you’re planning a trip to Greece without driving, these areas offer the best mix of transport connections, organized tours, and walkable amenities.
Argostoli is the main bus and ferry hub, while Lassi and Skala have the most tour operators and a good level of amenities within walking distance. The bus network is there but it’s mostly designed for locals, so renting a car is still the best option if you want to visit Myrtos, Petani, Fiskardo and Assos.
Practical Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in Kefalonia
Kefalonia is large and varied, so a few practical decisions upfront can save you hours of driving and help you get more out of your trip.
- Distances matter: Skala to Fiskardo is around 1 hour 45 minutes by car, so pick a base close to the sights you most want to see.
- Stay in two areas if you have 10+ days: combine a southern base like Lassi or Argostoli with a northern one like Fiskardo or Agia Efimia to cover the whole island without long daily drives.
- Rent a car: strongly recommended everywhere except Argostoli, Lassi and Skala. The easiest option is to pick up your rental at the airport on arrival.

- Closest airport hotels: Svoronata is just a 10-minute drive from the airport, ideal for early flights or short stays.
