The island has about 254km of coastline and more than 40 beaches. Several of these boast Blue Flag status, which means they have clean water, good sanitary facilities, and they are environmentally well managed.

Let’s get into it!

The Most Famous Beaches in Kefalonia

Kefalonia’s fame as a holiday destination relies heavily on just two of them: Myrtos and Antisamos. Both are located on the central-northern region of the island. They are pebble beaches with crystal-clear waters and can be reached easily from almost any place in Kefalonia. They both deserve a visit, but each for different reasons

Myrtos Beach

Myrtos is undoubtedly the most photographed beach in Kefalonia and frequently features in global “best beaches” listings. The landscape is so unique that it hardly needs description: a long, curved line of shining white pebbles enclosed by towering limestone cliffs that reach up to 300m in height, and water of a deep turquoise color that glows under the sun. It has a Blue Flag certification and is located some 30km north of Argostoli on the western coast.

The iconic view of the beach is not from the beach itself but rather from a tourist viewpoint on the road above, which descends down to the bay in hairpin turns. Many photos you see of Kefalonia are taken at this spot.

Some practical advice: there is a free parking area down the beach that gets filled by mid-morning in July and August, so either arrive before 11 AM or plan your visit around sunset. Sunbeds and umbrellas can be rented, but besides a single snack bar, there are no other facilities. Bring your own water, sunscreen, and snacks. Since the white pebbles produce very strong sun reflection, having a shade is very important. Also, the water gets deep very quickly, which is one reason that Myrtos is more suitable for experienced swimmers rather than children. Plus, when the wind blows, waves may rise.

Antisamos Beach

Antisamos is primarily recognized as a filming location for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, the movie adapted from the Louis de Bernires novel about the Greek island of Kefalonia during World War II. This is a quite expansive beach of small pebbles lined with lush green hills that almost touch the sea. The stark contrast of the white pebbles, the clean blue sea and the thick vegetation behind is what makes the scene appear quite exotic.

The beach is located about 4km east of Sami and is a 30km drive from Argostoli, that goes through a winding mountain road and pine forest. Antisamos is very well organized: you will find sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, tavernas, and a diving club, which makes it a very handy option for group travel with friends in Greece and full-day outings. The water is quite deep here as well.

The beach complements naturally with a trip to the nearby Melissani Lake and Drogarati Cave, both of which are a short drive away. Most tourists who come for the day combine all three.

Best Beaches Near Argostoli, Kefalonia

The best beaches in Argostoli, Kefalonia are located along the Lassi peninsula, 23km south of the town. These beaches have very fine sand, shallow pools of water, and all kinds of facilities. This part of the coast is also the most convenient one for those who don’t want to take a car every day, making it especially suitable for senior travel in Greece, and a smart choice when deciding where to stay in Kefalonia. Most of the beaches can be reached by a 10-min taxi ride at the most, and some are even walkable along the seaside Fanari (Lighthouse) Road

Makris Gialos

Makris Gialos is the most frequented beach near Argostoli and the busiest one out of the Lassi group. It is a golden sandy beach with shallow turquoise waters that warm up quickly. It is situated around 3km south of the capital on the airport road. There are beach bars and tavernas, sunbeds (front-row loungers cost around €25 – €30 during peak season), watersports, and a lifeguard. The crowd is predominantly younger and more energetic in July and August, so getting there early is advised if you want a good spot.

Platis Gialos

Platis Gialos is almost a continuation of Makris Gialos, the only difference being a small rocky headland, and it generally seems quieter and less crowded. The sand is just as silky and the water just as transparent, with some excellent snorkelling close to the rocks. The beach is located under the famous White Rocks Hotel and is a well-liked spot for those who want to stay in Lassi but not in the busiest part of the coast. Sunbeds, umbrellas, a beach bar, and changing facilities are available on the premises.

Gradakia

Gradakia is a hidden gem of a cove that lies between Argostoli and the livelier beaches of Lassi. It exudes family-friendly vibes: the water is shallow and calm, the sand is soft, and there are noticeably less people than in Makris or Platis Gialos. A small bar rents sunbeds, and a lot of shade provided by the surrounding cliffs in the afternoon. There is also plenty of parking. If your concerns are the safety of small children or just want a peaceful beach day within a walking distance of the town, Gradakia is the ideal beach.

Kalamia & Paliostafida

Kalamia and Paliostafida are peaceful alternatives along the Fanari (Lighthouse) Road, the beautiful coastal drive that goes from Argostoli to the Saint Theodore Lighthouse. They are two small, quite intimate coves rather than extensive beaches. Kalamia is a rocky beach with crystal-clear, excellent water for snorkelling, while Paliostafida (also called Antonio’s) features a small bar, sunbeds, and a more sandy entry. Both are just a short walk from central Argostoli and therefore are quite convenient if you are looking for a late-afternoon swim

Minies

Minies is the beach nearest to Kefalonia airport, about 10km south of Argostoli, and it is mainly famous for an unusual feature: planes fly right over as they depart and arrive. As for the beach, it is a lengthy sandy area with the shallow water warming up very quickly. Part of it is organized with a few traditional tavernas serving fresh fish. Minies has a laid-back atmosphere. Very suitable if your flight is late, and you want to have one last swim before departing

Sandy Beaches in Kefalonia

Usually, the top beaches with sand in Kefalonia are found mostly along the south and west shores. Skala, Lourdas, Makris Gialos, Xi, and Avithos have soft sand, in contrast to the white pebbles that are characteristic of the northern part. If you are taking a trip with small kids or just like sand more than pebbles, then you should organize your beach days in these parts of the coast and avoid the more striking but pebbly bays of Erisos peninsula

Skala Beach

Skala is the longest sandy beach in Kefalonia, at around 3 – 5km in length, runs along the southeastern coast, and has Blue Flag status for the quality of its water. The sand here is mainly fine with some areas of small pebbles, the water is clear and it gets gradually deeper, and pine trees reach right up to the beach. A range of beach bars, tavernas, sunbeds, and watersports facilities is available, plus free parts between the organized ones. The Skala spot itself is among the most well-liked places for beach holidays on the island

Lourdas (Lourdata)

Lourdas is a long sandy beach on the southern side of Kefalonia, just beneath the slopes of Mt. Ainos, the island’s highest peak. The 1.5km long stretch of powdery white sand is arranged with lines of sunbeds, beach bars, and tavernas just a few minutes walk away. The water is safe and shallow at the entry, which is why it’s a great family choice. Thanks to the mountain backdrop, Lourdas has a more dramatic atmosphere compared to many of the local resort beaches, and the vicinity around is covered with Mt Ainos’s waterfalls and trails for hiking

Xi Beach

One of the things that make Xi Beach stand out among the beaches of Kefalonia is its reddish-orange sand and natural clay, situated on the Paliki peninsula about 7km southwest of Lixouri. The sand and clay are very rich in minerals and it’s common for local people to smear themselves with the wet clay for skin treatment. The beach is spacious and shallow, safe for kids and fully equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, beach bars, and watersports. The bright red sand is a sharp contrast with the turquoise water and white limestone cliffs above, making one of the island’s most visually stunning beach scenes.

Lepeda Beach

Lepeda is a quieter alternative with red sand to Xi, also located on the Paliki peninsula and just a short drive north of Lixouri. It has the same reddish sand-and-clay combination but with less people, and a more local atmosphere. Several large rocks segment the beach into smaller parts. The water is shallow and tranquil, and there is a small taverna for food and refreshments.

Avithos

Avithos is a tiny, golden sand beach located on the south coast, about 12km from Argostoli, not far from the village of Svoronata. What makes it different is the location: dramatic limestone cliffs enclose the bay on one side and the water is crystal clear and deep blue which makes a striking contrast with the soft sand. It is partially set up with sunbeds, umbrellas, and a beach bar, but is noticeably quieter than the Lassi or Skala beaches. It’s a compelling option if you’re interested in a sandy beach coupled with scenic drama, rather than just amenities.

Ai Helis & Ammes

There are two smaller sandy beaches near the Kefalonia airport, Ai Helis and Ammes, both family-oriented and at a comfortable distance from Argostoli (approximately 11km south). Ai Helis is a sandy and well-equipped beach that offers shallow water, great ambiance, and is mostly frequented by locals making it quieter than the Lassi beaches. Ammes beach is even closer to the airport and offers golden sand, calm shallow water, and the same plane-spotting excitement as Minies. Both can be used as a half-day beach visit on the days of arrival or departure

Best Beaches for Families in Kefalonia

Kefalonia is an ideal destination for family travel in Greece: the six beaches with the best family-friendly facilities are Makris Gialos, Platis Gialos, Lourdas, Xi, Skala, and Avithos. All these beaches are excellent for kids as the water is shallow and calm and it is easy to get food and drink. Each beach provides practical things parents need: nearby toilets, shaded spots, and somewhere to grab lunch without packing up the whole beach kit.

Makris Gialos & Platis Gialos: These two beaches on the Lassi peninsula offer a family-friendly atmosphere. The water is shallow for a long way from shore, the golden sand is soft underfoot, and Makris Gialos even has a lifeguard in peak season. Also, Platis Gialos is the quieter side that small kids are free to roam around.

Lourdas (Lourdata): Families enjoy the gradual and safe entry of Lourdas into the sea that stretches for 1.5km of fine white sand. Two parallel lines of sunbeds along with beach bars and tavernas nearby provide all you need for the day, whereas you can rely on the calmness of the Ionian water, even in the middle of the summer.

Skala Beach: Skala is a good place for families who want to stay at the beach for their whole holiday instead of making a day trip only. The 3 – 5km of sand allow you to find a secluded place, the water at the entry is shallow and clear, and the resort behind the beach is well set up for families with tavernas, ice-cream shops, and mini-markets.

Avithos: Avithos is located on the southern coast. It is a quiet family spot about 12km from Argostoli. The golden sand is soft and the water at the shore is shallow. In addition, it is partially equipped with sunbeds and a beach bar, making it a good compromise if you want family amenities without the busy resort atmosphere of Lassi or Skala.

Secluded & Hidden Beaches in Kefalonia

Some of Kefalonia’s most stunning beaches are also its most challenging to reach. The island has many hidden coves that can only be accessed by boat, forest path, or long flights of cliffside steps. All the extra work rewards you with cleaner water, fewer people, and the kind of magnificent Ionian scenery that is perfect for honeymoon travel in Greece, away from busy resort beaches.

Fteri Beach

Fteri is one of the most remote beaches on Kefalonia, reachable only by boat or a steep hike down from the cliffs above. The small water taxi from Zola Harbour is the quickest way and it takes 10 minutes and costs around €20. You get turquoise water, white pebbles, and great cliff scenery like Myrtos. At noon, Fteri can get crowded, so if you want to enjoy it at its best, arrive early or late.

Dafnoudi Beach

Dafnoudi is a lovely small secluded pebbly beach close to Fiskardo, on the northern Erisos peninsula, which can be reached by a brief forest walk of around 10 – 15 minutes from the parking area. The path goes through the cypress and olive trees before it leads to a narrow cove with crystal-clear water and a small cave. There are no facilities, sunbeds, or food, so bring everything you need. The walk and the tranquil shallow water make it a favourite quiet spot.

Emblisi

Located roughly 2km west of Fiskardo, Emblisi is beautifully serene and one of the most stunning unorganized beaches on the island. It is a combination of white pebbles and flat rocky planks which also serve as natural sunbathing spots. The water here is clear and perfect for snorkeling. Since there are no sunbeds, umbrellas or beach bars at all, you will have to bring your stuff with you. Nevertheless, Emblisi can get quite crowded in the summer due to its closeness to Fiskardo, so getting there early is a must.

Alaties Beach

Alaties is a small secluded beach on the northern coastal area near the village of Antipata, about 2km from Fiskardo. The shore area is quite small, more like a pocket cove than a beach, where you could spend the whole day. The environment is amazing with smooth white rocky formations surrounding the turquoise water. Just one small tavern is located right above the beach and serves fresh Greek food made from local ingredients. Having a swim here and then a long lunch on the terrace overlooking the sea would be a perfect combination.

Platia Ammos

Platia Ammos is a really wild and dramatic beach located on the western edge of the Paliki peninsula, about 42km north-west of Argostoli. Getting there is quite a challenge: about 280 steps carved into the face of the cliff are the only way since a landslide in 2014 closed the road. If you go down, you will find no facilities, and you can only get out by going back up, so carry some water and sun protection. You will be rewarded with golden sand, crystal clear water, and hardly any other people around

Kako Lagadi

Kako Lagadi is a hidden cove on the northeastern coast between Fiskardo and Agia Efimia. You will have to go down a pretty challenging path from a small clearing next to the main road. The beach is a narrow strip of white pebbles with steep cliffs in the background. The sea is very clear and calm, there are no facilities, no crowds, and hardly any signposts. It is a real off-the-beaten-path destination for those who are adventurous and willing to make the effort.

Best Beaches for Snorkeling in Kefalonia

The top snorkeling beaches in Kefalonia are Emblisi, Foki, and Kaminia. All three locations feature excellent water clarity, rocky shelves and underwater formations that attract a variety of marine life. Also, the calm conditions make it easy even for novices to spot the fish. Basically, you will need to carry your snorkeling equipment since these beaches are barely organized in terms of rentals.

Emblisi: Emblisi is located slightly west of Fiskardo. Because of its flat rocky shelves and water with perfect clarity, this is one of the best snorkeling locations on the island. Small fish, sea urchins, and sometimes octopuses can be spotted among the shallow rocks near the shore, while there are deeper drop-offs further out for more experienced swimmers.

Foki: Foki is a rather small pebble beach located about 2km south of Fiskardo. It is surrounded by olive and cypress trees that provide shade by extending all the way to the shore. Excellent for snorkeling with calm water, good visibility and rocky entry. In addition, the water is home to plenty of small fish around the rocks at both ends of the cove.

Kaminia: On the southeastern coast near Skala, the beach of Kaminia offers a great snorkeling experience along with an opportunity to see Caretta Caretta sea turtles during their nesting season (May – October). Since the water is shallow and calm and the seabed is sandy, visibility is very good. Also, due to the protected status of the beach, marine life is more abundant as compared to busier resort beaches nearby.

Dramatic & Scenic Beaches (Beyond Myrtos)

Myrtos is the beach that gets featured on postcards, but it is not the only beach on Kefalonia with outstanding natural scenery. A few lesser-known beaches offer the same steep cliffs, deep turquoise water, and horseshoe-bay scenery. Sometimes they are even better and most of them deliver this experience without overcrowding

Petani Beach

Petani is often described as “Myrtos without the crowds” , a horseshoe-shaped bay at the western tip of the Paliki peninsula that has the same dramatic cliffs, white pebbles, and beautiful blue water as its famous neighbor. The bay is located approximately 35km from Argostoli and 10km north of Lixouri and is accessible via a winding road that leads to a gorgeous viewpoint just before the descent.

Two small restaurants are located on a terrace above the beach and serve fresh seafood, while the beach itself has sunbeds, umbrellas, and very few visitors in comparison with Myrtos.

Fteri Beach

Fteri can compete with Myrtos as far as the color of the water is concerned. Many say that Fteri has the most vivid blue on the entire island. You can only get to the beach by boat from Zola Harbour or by a steep walk down through the cliff area. The scene is nothing short of a film: white pebbles, vertical sheer cliffs, and water that ranges from turquoise to dark blue depending on the light and angle. As there are no facilities, it is advisable to bring along food, water, and shade.

Assos

Assos is a chain of small pebble coves around the village of Assos, which is probably the most photographed place in Kefalonia. The village stands on a narrow strip of land that connects the rest of the island with the forested headland, where a 16th century Venetian castle overlooks the landscape. The pastel colored houses of Assos are lined up, one beneath the other until they meet the sea. The small intimate hidden coves with clear blue water make it a perfect place to swim between lunches in one of the village taverns.

Foki Beach

Foki is the most atmospheric beach in northern Kefalonia, set in a small cove about 2km south of Fiskardo. What sets it apart is the thick canopy of cypress and olive trees that grow right down to the beach, allowing visitors to enjoy some natural shade. The water is calm and very clear, the pebble beach gently slopes into the sea and it is a quiet, almost protected bay thanks to the dense greenery. There are no facilities, so be sure to bring everything you need.

When to Visit Kefalonia’s Beaches

Kefalonia’s beaches are at their best from June to September, when the sea is warm and all the beach facilities are open, according to typical Kefalonia weather conditions. May and late September are the strongest shoulder months with warm water and fewer crowds. Also, keep in mind that Skala, Kaminia, and Mounda are Caretta Caretta turtle nesting beaches from May to October, so adhere to the board marked nesting zones

How to Get Around Kefalonia’s Beaches

If you want to discover the beaches of Kefalonia, a car rental is a must. The island is large and the bus services are quite limited outside of summer. The ferry from Argostoli to Lixouri is the most convenient way to access Paliki beaches such as Xi and Petani. When looking for secluded coves, water taxis and boat trips operate from Zola Harbour, Fiskardo, and Sami

Conclusion

From the iconic crescent of Myrtos to the red sands of Xi and the family-friendly stretches near Argostoli, Kefalonia beaches can offer quite a range of diversity. Aside from the most famous spots, this guide pinpointed the best sandy and family beaches, the hidden coves worth the effort, and the most dramatic scenery beyond Myrtos. The best thing to do is to base your planning around two or three coastal areas instead of attempting to visit everything in three days.
