When is the Best Time to Visit Rome?
The best time to visit Rome is mid-April – May or late September – October, periods that are particularly popular for senior travel in Italy thanks to the pleasant temperatures and manageable crowds. The daytime temperatures are comfortably high at around 20-25°C, rain is moderate, and the biggest summer crowds have already moved away, making sightseeing a lot more enjoyable. July and August are the sunniest but they also come with hot temperatures and larger crowds. On the contrary, November – February is still relatively mild and quiet, albeit wetter.
What to Pack for Rome
- Pack for Rome by season, but a few essentials apply all year:
- Year-round: broken-in walking shoes (the city’s sampietrini cobblestones punish flimsy sandals), plus a scarf or wrap. Churches and St. Peter’s enforce a covered-shoulders-and-knees dress code that catches out summer visitors in vests and shorts.
- Summer: a hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle for Rome’s free nasoni drinking fountains.
- Winter: layers and a light rain jacket.

Don’t forget to stay hydrated by drinking from the city’s free nasoni fountains.
Weather in Rome in August
August is generally considered the hottest month. The average temperature reaches 31°C (88°F), and during summer heatwaves, temperatures can rise to more than 35°C.
